Resistance, seakeeping and maneuvering

The challenge

Ship resistance and behavior at several speeds in any conditions from calm waters to waves and storms and maneuverability in general are of utmost importance for the design of a new hull. One way to determine these characteristics is by towing tank experiments, performed at model scale. The results are then extrapolated to full scale using empirical laws. Building these models is time-consuming however and towing tank facilities have limited availability, often not compatible with project deadlines. That's one of the main reasons why CFD is being used more and more at the design stage. CFD allows for engineers to perform a large number of tests in a very short timeframe and at full scale.

NUMFLO solution

NUMFLO has developed a very strong expertise in marine hydrodynamics CFD simulations, including resistance in deep and shallow water, seakeeping in head waves, waves with incidence, side waves, following waves, manoeuvring such as turning circle, zig-zag, course keeping, roll and pitch damping, crash stop, etc.

We work for a wide range of naval architecture projects, going from container ships, race sailing boats, military vessels and passenger ships to hydrofoils, jack-up vessels, catamarans, planing hulls,etc...

The FINE™/Marine software suite from Cadence, with its dedicated "C-wizard” environment, is used for the set-up of the appropriate settings for all types of marine simulations. NUMFLO benefits from all the latest Cadence software developments, providing highly competitive services in all marine CFD applications.
