Meshing time reduction with Autogrid5™

As a key player in the aerospace market, at GKN Aerospace we  need to be very demanding regarding the capabilities of the tools we use. In the fast-paced environment that is the CFD world, our engineers need a robust and quick mesh generator, providing an accurate capturing of our complex turbomachinery geometries.

"With AutoGrid5, it is only a matter of a few hours to come up with a high quality periodic matching mesh around multiple blade rows, starting from scratch. The row-wizard setting up automatically a different topology for each type of machine configuration (axial compressor, axial turbine, centrifugal impeller, etc.) provides us a huge gain of time."

"We are investigating a lot of advanced features, such as cavities using the ZR effects, fillets on the hub, snubber with fillets, partial tip gaps, etc., so the possibility to include them automatically and easily in the final mesh allows us to capture more accurately the topology of the flow. Globally speaking, this tool saves us time and increases the accuracy of our CFD simulations."

 

Fillets can be imported from a CAD model, or directly created within the interface of AutoGrid5. In GKN’s case, they are created within AG5.

Non-axisymmetric and partial tip gaps (in black) can be created on the hub and on the shroud of a blade.
