Optimizing the design under consideration of uncertainties


Robust Design Optimization (RDO) allows to account for operational or manufacturing variability in the design optimization process. It allows to aim at the same time at an improved performance and more performance stability given the imposed uncertainties. The same input variation leads to a smaller variation of the response of the system, ie. The system is more robust versus variations of the input parameters (flow conditions, geometries, manufacturing variability, …).

Marine propeller optimization

The example below compares the standard (deterministic) and robust design optimization of a marine propeller. Both designs are then compared with the original design and it is very clear that the final design choice obtained by the optimization process is very different. At the same time the increase in mean performance is identical (+8,5%). However, the robust design optimization reduces the variability by 17,7% compared to an increase of variability of 2,6% for the deterministic design. The system is thus more robust with respect to variations in the input parameters (flow conditions, geometries, manufacturing variability).
